The Fickle Pickle is located in a charming late Victorian cottage and specializes in “Southern classics and comfort food with a modern twist”. The first time I visited I tried the Brie B.L.T. (made with arugula and a delicious basil pesto) and I couldn’t get over it! I couldn’t wait until I could go back and have it again – so of course, the next couple of times I visited I had the Brie B.L.T. I finally had to change my order just so I could try something else – the Roasted Vegetable Sandwich (portobello mushroom, zucchini & red pepper with goat cheese and basil pesto on sourdough bread – I ordered it hot, but it’s also available cold) – delicious again!

The menu is chock-full of enticing salads and sandwiches, like fried green tomato sandwich and a yummy twist on chicken salad, with hazelnuts, dried cherries and tarragon. The hot, freshly-made potato chips are served with house-made ketchup and bleu cheese. The dinner menu adds more specialties, like shrimp and grits and big, juicy burgers. But the pièces de résistance is the signature fried Cajun pickle served with Creole Rémoulade Sauce (pictured) – the batter has a little kick to it and the Rémoulade is the perfect complement.

The Fickle Pickle is open Monday from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and Tuesday through Saturday from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM (closed on Sundays). Now that the weather is warming up, the patio is a great place to sit – especially on Thursday nights when there is live music for your entertainment! And though I have not tried their breakfast menu yet, it looks good – and it’s on my list of places to try.

I’m a big fan of breakfast, so I’m a fan of places like the Flying Biscuit that truly do breakfast well. While the line at the door can stack up on the weekend if you get there after 9:30 AM, it’s worth the wait. My usual order is the Flying Biscuit Breakfast – two eggs (most recently, I had them over medium) with sausage, grits, and of course, a biscuit. Two things bear mentioning for those of you who have never been to the Flying Biscuit: the sausage patties are actually chicken sausage and are deliciously spicy; and the grits are probably the most heavenly grits I’ve ever tasted, creamy and cheesy and mouthwateringly good. At some other breakfast places, the grits usually seem like an afterthought, and are usually the last thing I eat, if I’m not already full. At the Flying Biscuit, I dive into my grits first-thing and am usually tempted to ask for more (but never have the room to actually eat more – the portions are that generous).

Another favorite is the oatmeal pancakes with the peach compote (pictured below) – even my hubby can’t eat the entire portion! And no commentary on the Flying Biscuit would be complete without mentioning the amazing biscuits and the sweet-and-tart apple-cranberry butter – if you try nothing else, try the biscuits with the apple-cranberry butter! They’re practically dessert-worthy!

The Norcross location of the Flying Biscuit also features live music on Tuesday and Saturday nights for Sweetwater Music Nights that focus on local talent, and local artists are featured in a constantly revolving art collection in the restaurant. Even though the café is franchised, it still has the feel of a local favorite and stays involved in the community.

Fans of the original in-town Flying Biscuit Café will probably have a thing or two to say about this post, which highlights the Norcross location of the now-franchised Flying Biscuit, but the biscuits are just a fluffy and delicious, the staff just as friendly, the décor just as cheerful. There are, of course, six other locations around the Atlanta area – Buckhead, Midtown, Sandy Springs, Candler Park, Marietta. Me? I like the Norcross one because it’s closest to home. Here’s the main thing – I’ve never been disappointed at any of the Flying Biscuit locations.

I grew up in Florida where we have the Plant City Strawberry Festival each year, so fresh-picked strawberries were a staple. It was fun to spend 30 minutes out in the sun on this gorgeous day, inhaling the sweet scent of ripe strawberries, and picking our own huge basket full to bring home.

Less than 45 minutes from the very center of Atlanta, Washington Farms’ Loganville farm is packed with plants bearing gorgeous, ripe strawberries ready for picking. They provide 1-gallon buckets (that’s a lot of strawberries) and each full bucket you pick is only $10 (way cheaper than buying from the grocery store). Bring your own container to bring the berries home in, or pay $1 to keep your bucket. The farm is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM through June (check website for availability – they post regular updates), but if you plan to come in the afternoon on Saturday, call ahead to be sure there are still plenty of berries to be picked, as they never know what kind of crowds will come on the weekends.

It’s a fun trip to do with friends or your family - pack a picnic lunch and enjoy it with some of your fresh strawberries at one of the many picnic tables in the shade or just stop by to pick your berries and be on your way. Why not plan a trip out to Washington Farms? Try something new, be bold and do something different! And be prepared to bring home as many fresh, luscious strawberries as you can handle!

In addition, there is plenty to food at the food court and numerous eateries and two full days of live music and entertainment. There’s also a plethora of art activities for kids, including a free interactive art experience sponsored by the Purple Hippo Art Studio. And plan to take part in the “Chairs for Charity auction, during which chairs decorated by students from DeKalb’s elementary, middle and high school students in the Dunwoody area will be auctioned off to benefit the school’s art programs and various charitable projects supported by the Rotary Club of Dunwoody. Be sure to visit the festival’s Kid Zone to view and bid on these funky, cool, and artistic multi-media pieces by Dunwoody’s own students!
